Decolonizing Sex & Religion
with Robyn Henderson-Espinoza, PhD and Tristan Taormino
What happens when a transqueer Latinx public theologian and a queer white sex-positive feminist walk into a bar? They explore the intersection of sex and religion. Join Robyn and Tristan for a lecture and interactive discussion that explores the ways in which normative, white, religious dogma and practice harm nearly everyone and especially marginalized folks. Let’s interrogate the ways religion, as a social institution, moralizes behavior, builds shame and guilt, and creates confusion and fear around sexuality. How do Western Christian religions marginalize so-called “alternative” sex and relationships? How can we challenge the false spiritual/sexual binary that supports other harmful binaries? How might strategies of decolonial feminism help us decolonize our spirit and practice of religion and sex? How can we work toward revolutionary freedom that encompasses all of who we are?

Sex Down South
The idea of the Sex Down South Conference was brought into this world by Marla Renee Stewart and Tia Marie Mosley. After working together on several sexuality-related projects in the past, they decided that they wanted to reach a bigger audience and produce something better than they have ever done in the past. Sex Down South has become that. This conference is full of love, excitement, and endless possibilities. With a call out to possible crew members all around the nation, we now have a solid team that helps to produce the event every year. Their dedication, passion, and experience working in this field is the glue that holds this conference together each and every event that we hold. Over the course of the 3 days there will be workshops, education stations, healing spaces, and performances. We hope that you attend as many things that you feel drawn to as possible and that you have a good, sexy, and safe time. I am doing two presentations (see below for descriptions)

Race and Desire
Robyn Henderson-Espinoza, Aida Manduley, M’kali-Hashiki, Kevin Patterson, moderated by me

What roles does race play in our desires, and why does it matter? How do we effectively decolonize our sexuality, and not just metaphorically? In this panel, we will explore how desirability and whiteness intertwine, as well as how to challenge this dynamic even when white people aren’t directly involved. We’ll discuss how people of color may divest from the trappings of whiteness in their relationships and how these dynamics shift in monogamous vs. non-monogamous contexts. Join us to learn how we navigate power dynamics,  bodily autonomy, and building chosen families under white supremacy and contemplate where “wokeness” and activism come into play.

Valentine’s Day is for Multiple Lovers
There are so many examples of how monogamy is upheld as the norm and the goal for relationships, and it can feel especially heightened around a holiday like Valentine’s Day. Couples-centered, romanticized marketing and media can make many of us feel left out. In fact, the mythology around this holiday gets right to the heart of many of the challenges non-monogamous folks face, including stigma and a lack of support from those around us. Let’s challenge the ideals of mononormativity (society’s practices and institutions that privilege and value monogamy as fundamental and “natural”) and talk about how consensual non-monogamy helps us to grown and learn. We will explore practical ways to negotiate this holiday (and other big days) with multiple partners so everyone feels seen, acknowledged, and loved. A box of chocolates can be divine, but this year give a gift that keeps on giving: tools to redefine relationships!
Location: The Pleasure Chest, 7733 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90046.
Admission: Free and open to all. Seating on a first come, first serve basis.
